If you’re interested in exploring your favorite spirit in a bold new way, here’s how to go about it:

Start with a whiskey in the 40%–47% ABV range, as higher alcohol content can be harder on the palate
Hold it to your nose and inhale to take in the aromas—what we’re able to taste is roughly 80% dependent on our sense of smell
Begin with a few very small sips to help your taste buds acclimate
Try a fuller, but still small, sip and hold it in your mouth for a few seconds before swallowing to see how the flavors have evolved
Add a few drops of warm water to open up the aromas and unlock even more flavor
